Hello world!

Hi, and welcome to my little site. My real name is Meagan but you can call me Luba. My nickname Luba was given to me by my husband and he and all of my close friends use it. The name Luba comes from Eastern Europe and is used as a term of endearment- it is similar to the Ukrainian word любов (pronounced lyubov) meaning love and “ulubiona osoba” (favorite person) in Polish- they use this name not just to express their love for me but to easily decline my name when we speak Polish as all Polish girls names end with an “a”.

I am passionate about language learning and how it benefits us mentally and socially. I am from the USA where almost 80% of the population are monolingual English speakers and I hope to see that change in my lifetime. In the USA, children are exposed to languages in school much later than the average European and do not have much opportunity to practice their speaking abilities in a primarily English speaking country, causing them to lose motivation or skills. If foreign language programs were more prioritized in American schools perhaps we’d have a more bilingual country but thankfully we live in an age of unlimited access to information.

I made this blog to share my passion with others and provide a helping hand on their language journey but of course, my motivations are not entirely selfless- by writing posts I also hope to improve my own understandings of languages and linguistics. So let’s start learning together!
